Mike, who is the only Realtor who sits on the board of directors for the local Home Builder’s Association, began his journey in real estate while he was still in college. “My last year, I only had classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays,” he explains, “so I decided to get my license, and I started as an assistant.” In the nearly twenty years since, Mike has developed a reputation as a Realtor who can be trusted to consistently provide his many clients with expert real estate guidance. His focus on exceptional client service has become his calling card, and his business continues to grow exponentially year after year.

A significant portion of Mike’s business is based on repeat and referral business, which is perhaps the best metric of success in the real estate industry. Routinely handling the listings of up to ten builders, Mike successfully juggles quantity with quality of service with the assistance of his equally-dedicated team at Urban Acres.

Establishing a relationship with past clients and staying top-of-mind is another factor in Mike’s continuing success. “We’ve been doing a lot of digital marketing,” he explains. “And we use programs like Constant Contact. We also send out postcards and emails, that type of thing, just to keep our name in front of them.”

Mike utilizes state-of-the-art marketing techniques to make sure his listings are seen in their best light and by as many potential buyers as possible. “We’re a member of both the Iowa City MLS and the Cedar Rapids MLS,” he says. “We also do a lot of Facebook and Instagram advertising. We’ve really grown our Facebook presence just by adding tips, articles, and other things. Additionally, we work with a local Sinclair broadcaster to do targeted Facebook ads.” Mike also leverages professional photography, video, virtual tours and open houses to great effect.

When he’s not working, Mike enjoys spending time with his family at their cabin. “We like to go there and have a lot of family get-togethers,” he says. “Bonfires and barbeques, things like that. We also have an RV, and the kids get to ride their four-wheelers. Family time is important to me.” Mike’s wife Angie is also in the real estate business, and owns rental property management company Brotherton Investments. Mike also actively supports the local school district.

Mike’s current plans are to continue growing his business while sacrificing none of the exceptional client service that has become synonymous with his name. Staying ahead of the pack is also important, and to that end Mike and his team are focusing on on the digital aspect of the industry. “We’ve just hired someone who is going to be our Digital Platform Specialist,” he says, “to make sure we’re keeping up with everything. That’s our biggest focus right now, just staying differentiated and showing people how we’re doing that.”

Mike is grateful for the support he receives from his team at Urban Acres. “Our team’s tagline is ‘One Team, One Vision’, and it comes down to the fact that an individual agent can’t do everything by themselves,” he says, “so we have a team approach that covers everything. If I’m busy, someone else is always available to provide the expertise to take care of any issue.”
