After beginning his work life as a social worker, Steve Scheuring has remained committed to serving his community. When he and his wife decided to start a family, Steve tried various sales positions, selling cars and computers, before a friend suggested he try a career in real estate. Since then, he’s become a top-producing agent in his home town of Oak Park, Illinois. As a real estate agent, Steve’s work helps others through the important life milestone of home ownership while providing him with a lucrative vocation. Through real estate, he’s also discovered other unique ways to give back to the local community in recent years.

A fourth generation of his family to call Oak Park home, Steve is a born area expert! He works as a solo agent working primarily in the Oak Park and neighboring River Forest markets, just west of Chicago’s downtown loop. This area is attractive to young families; the bulk of Steve’s clients fit a younger demographic and are seeking a home where they can start and raise a family. The area is also a tourist hot spot, drawing over 1 million visitors per year pre-pandemic with its proximity to Chicago and cultural attractions. The area boasts one of the largest collections of notable architecture by Frank Lloyd Wright and is also the birthplace of writer Ernest Hemingway.

With his deep roots in the community, Steve’s business comes almost entirely through referral and repeat customers. His personal knowledge of the area from the school system to the housing supply are key to the value he offers clients. Steve and his wife have purchased and renovated two homes of their own and know firsthand the challenges of an older house; typical homes in Oak Park were built between 1890-1940. In addition, the town’s historic districts present unique requirements and restrictions such as no tear-downs and “renovate to original”. Being a lifelong resident gives Steve an edge of expertise in this uniquely desirable, architecturally rich town.

Steve utilizes a number of marketing channels for his listings including online sites and print ads in the local newspaper, The Wednesday Journal. In a community with a diverse but older population, the newspaper has wide circulation and provides solid exposure for marketing new listings; Steve also believes in supporting local media. With online advertising being the primary driver in today’s market, Steve found, during the pandemic, that adding drone video tours significantly increased the online traffic to his listings.

The pandemic provided Steve with another insight, a special way to utilize the photography skills he’s honed as a real estate agent to give back to those in need in his community. Steve and a fellow photography enthusiast heard about The Front Steps Project after it was started in Massachusetts in March of 2020. The project inspired photographers from around the world to photograph families outside their homes with all the proceeds being donated to food pantries, animal shelters and other nonprofit organizations and charities. Steve and his friend Corey Kessler, through Corey’s not-for-profit @photosforFOOD, have raised nearly $100K thus far for their local food pantry, Beyond Hunger, and even appeared in a book about the project!
