Being a REALTOR® is actually Barbara’s fourth career, and the fulfillment of a lifelong passion for real estate that began when she would accompany her mother to weekend open houses as a little girl. Before getting involved in real estate, Barbara excelled in a variety of diverse positions, including teaching high school and college German, working in labor relations representing labor, then management and finally as a labor neutral for the State of CA, and rising to an executive level in high tech sales and business development for storage networking firms in Silicon Valley from 1992-2000.
“My husband, Stu, and I both retired early from our Silicon Valley careers and bought land in Stone Canyon,” she explains. “I travelled the world for business and when we retired in 2000, took my husband on so many trips that he offered to get me a dog if I would find something else to keep me busy. That is when I decided to make real estate my fourth career!”
Barbara doesn’t operate with a team of agents to handle her clients. “When someone hires me, they work with me,” she explains. “Once a contract is in place, my husband manages it. It works out very well since I am someone who likes to think outside the box and Stu’s background is rooted in quality control.” Barbara has been at the top her game since the beginning of her real estate career. “I earned Rookie of the Year honors and haven’t slowed down since,” she says. She has since earned inclusion in the Long Realty 1926 Circle of Excellence Platinum level. “One of the reasons I’ve been so successful in real estate is because I’m able to listen to what my clients think they want, then dig deeper to match them with what they really want.” As a result, Barbara has been able to build her business primarily on referrals from satisfied clients. She hopes that clients who have worked with her will remember it as being the best experience they’ve ever had when working with a REALTOR®. “I don’t give up and am very innovative – I love the hunt! My goal is to make my clients’ real estate experience the most enjoyable and successful they’ve ever experienced.”
Barbara’s experience working with the State of California as a labor neutral helped her develop unparalleled negotiation skills. “I don’t accept no for an answer; that’s what makes you successful as a win/win negotiator,” she says. “In my role as a neutral I was very good at getting people who were entrenched in a position to get together.” Her time as an executive also comes into play when working with her clients who are in a similar role. “I understand their business focus and that their time is valuable. It’s my role to sort and present options to ensure their goal is met efficiently, professionally and successfully,” she says. “This includes helping clients identify the right property that will fit they lifestyle they want to lead here, which is probably very different from any way they’ve lived before.”
Barbara is committed to giving back to her profession and to the communities in which she works. She has served two terms on the Tucson Association of REALTORS® Board of Directors and is involved with several committees, including MLS Technology. Barbara and her husband are key supporters of the Stone Canyon Community Foundation, which provides grants to local non-profit groups. In addition to sponsoring SCCF events, Barbara also enjoys serving as the auctioneer at their fund-raising events.
