He didn’t realize it at the time, but the ten years Patrick O’Connell spent teaching in Philadelphia area schools helped prepare him to become one of the city’s top realtors.  With his knack for connecting with people and easing their anxiety about complicated concepts, Patrick led students to success in the classroom.   As an agent with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services Fox and Roach, Realtors top real estate agent in Pennsylvania Patrick O’Connell uses the same expert people skills to guide clients through the complexities of buying and selling property.  “What you’re doing as a teacher is guiding students toward mastery of a new skill.  The same thing happens in real estate,” Patrick points out. “Someone comes in and says, ‘I want to buy a house,’ but they don’t understand all of the things that are going to be involved.  So, it’s my job to educate them and guide them through the steps of understanding the process.”

“It can be a frightening experience even for the most sophisticated buyers and sellers,” continues Patrick.  He reassures his clients by listening empathetically and acting swiftly to resolve any problems that may develop during the transaction.  “Earning your clients’ trust is very important. I make sure they feel comfortable and know that I’m there for them,” he says.

Because his focus is residential property Patrick sometimes enlists a commercial broker to assist with investment transactions.  It’s all a part of providing his clients with the best service possible. “You can’t spread yourself too thin.  I have a great network of professionals whom I work with,” he says.

Patrick entered the real estate field in 1986 with Jackson Cross Realtors where he quickly became a top performing agent.  Over the ensuing 29 years, he maintained a standard of excellence as the company was reinvented multiple times – first merging into Fox and Roach Realtors, then buying Prudential Preferred Properties to become Prudential Fox and Roach Realtors, and finally being brought into Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway family of companies. Throughout all of those changes, Patrick has expanded his success through exceptional professionalism and by paying personalized attention to each one of his clients.

Genial and outgoing by nature, Patrick easily relates to clients from various backgrounds. “It’s very important that you look at everyone as being equal.  They may look different from you, they may speak a different language, they may have a different philosophy from you but you’ve got to treat them the same,” Patrick declares.

O’Connell enjoys nothing more than talking with people.  His hotel lobby office in Philadelphia’s Rittenhouse Square is a perfect launching pad for the face-to-face relationship building that is his business signature.  “I am in the center of Philadelphia between two rivers. It’s a very walkable area. Everything that happens in my daily life – whether it’s the dry cleaners, the fruit store, the coffee shop – it’s within walking range,” Patrick explains. “I also have people staying in the hotel who walk into my office.  They may be interviewing for a job and need to know about the housing market. These are the ways that I connect with people and cultivate business.”

For Patrick O’Connell, the joy of working in real estate mirrors what he loved about being a teacher.  As Patrick explains:  “As a realtor I get to share information with people and also learn from them.  People ask me sometimes why I left education.  I tell them that I never have!”
