For Derek Bissonnette, real estate was a natural choice. “I was actually selling a credit card machine to businesses, and I was selling one to Century 21 in Ottawa when the broker there said I should consider becoming an agent,” Derek explains. “I’ve been in it now for four years.” Today, Derek has his own team, including another agent named James. “I also have an amazing assistant named Jeannie who has been with me for just over a year, and handles marketing and advertising.” Everyone on his team was hand-picked by Derek, ensuring they all have similar goals and work ethics.
This, along with his interesting niche, has helped him grow immensely over the past few years. Serving most of Eastern Ontario, around 40% of his business is based on repeat clients and referrals.
Derek has already been interviewed by CBC News for his unique niche market. He says he discovered this market 3 years ago when he downloaded the Pokemon Go app for a bit of fun an exercise. “I noticed some players talking about wanting to buy a house while we were doing a raid, and they didn’t know a realtor. And it just kind of clicked. There’s a new market of several hundred people which no one is using.” He decided to start attending more tournaments and raids (locations set up by the game for people to meet and work together to acquire special pokemon), in order to meet people face-to-face and give out his branded stylus pens so the players could play in the winter months.
Clients met through the game now account for over 15% of his current business. But this is just one of the things that sets us apart. Derek has always been on to give & help, more than receive.
“What sets us apart is, we’re not really about money, we’re more about providing great service,” he says. “We make sure they’re happy and we try to make it as stress-free as possible. We keep it fun and light-hearted.” Derek and his team know how daunting buying a house can be, but by guiding their clients throughout the transaction, they hope to make it an enjoyable experience. When comes to marketing, they also go above and beyond, hiring a professional photographer and offering virtual tours. They advertise all listings on social media as well, and have a ‘coming soon’ period for about five days before the property goes live to drive up interest.
After the transaction is over, Derek and his team stay in touch with their clients, keeping them in the loop about any real estate updates. “We send out birthday cards and try to touch base with them several times a year, seeing how things are going with them and their family. We don’t do it to ask for referrals, it’s more about them knowing we are thinking about them and that we’re always here.”
All of their hard work pays off, as clients leave happy and eager to spread the word about their business. As Derek looks towards the future, he is excited to continue on his current path. “We want to expand and keep building our referrals.” In the meantime, there’s no doubt he will enjoy every minute of his work.
